What about those landlines…
Published on August 9, 2011.
Has telecom reached the end of the line? The landline, that is…
| PSTN, or “Public Switched Telephone Networks” may be approaching obsolescence. At least that’s what the experts at the FCC are thinking. According to Connected Planet, the FCC’s Technical Advisory Council (TAC) recommended setting a date for pulling the plug, perhaps as early as 2018.
Apparently, use of traditional telephone networks has declined dramatically, losing almost 66 million access lines representing a 7.3% decrease over the course of one year. TAC’s estimates suggest that VOIP lines will account for 42.5% of access lines in the U.S. by 2014. In fact, 25% of American adults have switched to wireless only service already.
For now, your landline service is secure; however, you may want to think ahead. Even if the FCC doesn’t kill it, PTSN will soon be history. Taking your company off the landline now may save you even more money down the road when everyone is suddenly clamoring for it. Of course, VOIP can save you money now, too, with its many options for hosted services and features unavailable on a traditional PBX. Get ahead of the pack. Call or email us to see just how much VOIP can save you today and tomorrow. |

Rural areas will be the hardest hit by the cut-off. That’s way TAC’s recommendations include a timeline that assures that other options (mobile or broadband) are available in those areas before the plug gets pulled.
